The NPRCs do use mice and other rodents in research, but their living systems can’t always provide as much information as monkeys can. Researchers may use mice to address their initial questions and then include monkeys to further their studies and answer more complex research questions. This continuum helps reduce the number of animals in research. It also accounts for the genetic closeness of nonhuman primates to humans to provide researchers with a comprehensive and comparable research model.
